• Summer 2009 Sets US Box Office Record Eight of the ten top-grossing films are genre fare, with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen taking first place, followed by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Pixar’s Up. The coming Labor Day weekend may add as much as $100 million to the summer’s final tally. The following summer movie totals, current up through August 30, come via Box Office Mojo .

• Fox rebooting Fantastic Four

  Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has been tapped to reboot the Fantastic Four movie franchise for Fox, bringing the FF into the same camp of rebooted Marvel heroes that the Punisher and the Hulk belong to, Variety reports.

  Goldsman will be acting as producer on the reboot. Michael Greene, veteran scripter of shows like Jack & Bobby, Smallville, Heroes and the upcoming Green Lantern movie, will write the screenplay.

  Fox has produced two films featuring the Fantastic Four so far, 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Both were directed by Barbershop helmer Tim Story and were noteworthy for having a fairly lighthearted tone in a superhero movie market dominated by the likes of The Dark Knight and the fairly grim X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

  Aside for winning an Oscar for his screenplay for Ron Howard’s A Beautiful Mind, Goldsman is known for producing films such as Constantine, I Am Legend and the upcoming adaptation of DC Comics’ Jonah Hex. He also gained some infamy for writing the generally reviled Batman & Robin.

  No word yet if this reboot will bring the FF into the same movie continuity shared by Iron Man, the Hulk and Nick Fury, as has been established in the “tags” following Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

• Warehouse 13 ratings set another Syfy record

  Warehouse 13 continues to set rating records for Syfy. The show’s sixth episode, “Burnout,” which aired on Aug. 11, was the most watched series telecast in the network’s 17-year history, with a total viewership of 4.4 million.

  The previous record for the most-watched series telecast on Syfy had been the fifth episode of Warehouse 13, aired the previous week.

  More than 1 million of the 4.4 million total viewership came via DVR playback.

  The six episodes of Warehouse 13 broadcast to that date, including full Live + 7 DVR data, all rank in the top 10 most watched series telecasts ever on Syfy.

  In head-to-head competition in the 9 p.m. (ET/PT) time slot, Warehouse 13 outperformed TNT’s Hawthorne by +24 percent in Adults 25-54, +11 percent in total viewers, and +9 percent in Adults 18-49.

  Warehouse 13 follows two Secret Service agents who find themselves abruptly transferred to a massive, top-secret storage facility in windswept South Dakota that houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse’s caretaker, Artie (Saul Rubinek), charges Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself.

  Warehouse 13 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT, only on Syfy.

• Watch the new Stargate Universe trailer

  A new trailer for Syfy’s Stargate Universe hit movie theaters over the weekend, playing before Halloween II and The Final Destination 3D—but you can see it here without shelling out for a ticket.

  Stargate Universe, which premieres as a two-hour movie event Oct. 2 at 9 p.m., follows the adventures of explorers who find themselves trapped on a never-ending mission aboard the Destiny, a ship built by the Ancients, when the crew learns the ship can’t return to Earth.

• Tron: Legacy release date set for Dec. 17, 2010

  Walt Disney will be releasing Tron: Legacy, its highly anticipated 3-D sequel to Tron, on Dec. 17, 2010, the studio confirmed today.

  The follow-up to the 1982 cult classic is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who is making his feature debut with the film. Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner return from the first film, which was released in the summer of 1982. Bridges and Boxleitner will be joined in Tron: Legacy by Garrett Hedlund, Michael Sheen, John Hurt, Olivia Wilde, James Frain and Beau Garrett.

  Currently scheduled for release on the same date are The Green Hornet, The Smurfs and Yogi Bear.

• Star Trek returns to IMAX for a two-week limited engagement

  If you missed seeing Star Trek when it played in IMAX theaters last May for a limited two-week run, now’s your chance to catch it on the big screen—and we mean the really big screen. J.J. Abrams’ blockbuster reboot will relaunch this Friday… into more than 89 IMAX theatres for an additional two-week limited engagement.

• Twilight Saga: New Moon tickets on sale now

  In a move that will make the blood of certain fans sing, Carmike Cinemas is now offering tickets to the midnight, Nov. 19, showings of The Twilight Saga: New Moon at 63 of the chain’s 247 theaters, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

  The move might be part of a new trend to sell tickets to highly anticipated movies months in advance of their release, as is evidenced by what some experts are calling the “healthy” ticket sales of James Cameron’s SF film Avatar, which opens on Dec. 18.

  The advance tickets to New Moon can be ordered through the online site Fandango. The early screenings will take place at Carmike theaters in small-to-medium markets, such as Fort Wayne, Ind., Winston-Salem, N.C., and Des Moines, Iowa.

  The Twilight Saga: New Moon opens in wide release on Nov. 20, 2009.

• Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight most pirated fiction of 2009

  The books in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series were the most-downloaded novels on BitTorrent this year and the only fiction to make the top 10 list, according to the site Freakbits. The other books on the list were either sexual in nature (The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Amazing Sex) or craft-related (Solar House—A Guide for the Solar Designer).

• R-rated Terminator Salvation coming to Blu-ray/DVD

  Remember that McG told SCI FI Wire that he shot an R-rated version of Terminator Salvation, which was eventually released as a PG-13 movie?

  Well, looks like the harder, more violent and boob-laden version will see the light of day, according to a report on UGO.com:

  The MPAA has released its e-mail list of latest films to get an official rating, and on that list is Terminator Salvation—Director’s Cut, which is apparently coming to Blu-ray and DVD at some point soon.

• Watch the new Astro Boy trailer, see the new poster

  Check out the newly released trailer for Astro Boy, which hits theaters Oct. 23. Like the original manga and TV series, the new English-language movie centers on the origins of the robot boy who was created by a scientist who had lost his real son.

  Freddie Highmore voices Astro, and Kristen Bell voices Cora, a street urchin who befriends him.

• Disney buys Marvel for $4 billion

  The Disney Company is buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in cash and stocks, according to an AP report published in USA Today.

  In a statement made to the New York Times, Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter said that “Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses.” And even though Perlmutter will continue to oversee Marvel properties after the buyout, just how Disney will be the “perfect home” for characters like the Punisher and Kick-Ass remains to be seen.

  With this deal, Disney will have ownership of Marvel’s library of more than 5,000 characters, including such icons as the Fantastic Four, the Hulk and such huge box-office powerhouses as the X-Men, Wolverine, Iron Man and Spider-Man.

  Robert Iger of Disney also told the Times, “We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation.”

  As of this writing, Marvel shareholders still need to approve the purchase.

• Summer Glau Cast in ‘Dollhouse’ Glau will appear in a multi-episode story arc set to unfold later in the upcoming second season. She will play a character named Bennett who has a history with Eliza Dushku’s Echo and who has an apparent connection to another, as yet unknown Dollhouse character. Rumor is her character will be from another Dollhouse and will appear in at least two episodes from episode 5, airing in October.

• Michael NeoFX states: The final act of Power Source will be out next week. It is looking rather good, and we have already started on the next episode and anticipate it coming out before the end of the year. We are also work on another Trek and Firefly project.

• Smallville Season 9 trailer plus season 8 recap. The very cool trailer provides a first glimpse at Brian Austin Green as the cyborg Metallo, Callum Blue as Major Zod, and Tom Welling as a very Matrix-Neo looking Superman. This is the way Superman Returns should have been done.

• Warehouse 13 breaks another Syfy audience record http://scifiwire.com/2009/08/warehouse-13-breaks-anoth.php. Warehouse 13, which last week broke viewing records when its fourth episode delivered the most females of any series telecast in Syfy’s history, set yet another record with its fifth. By adding nearly 1 million viewers from Live + 7 DVR playback (985,000), the Aug. 4 episode, “Elements,” with guest star Joe Flanigan, became the most watched original series telecast in Syfy’s 17-year history, delivering 4.3 million total viewers.
• Discussion: Has the change from SciFi to SyFy caused the success of Warehouse 13?
• Star Wars: The Clone Wars season two premieres Oct. 2 Coming off of the record-setting first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Cartoon Network announced today it will premiere a full slate of 22 all-new episodes for season two of the critically acclaimed CG-animated series from creator George Lucas and Lucasfilm Animation. The special one-hour season two premiere event of Star Wars: The Clone Wars airs Friday, October 2, at 8 p.m. ET.

• ‘Avatar’ Teaser Trailer Breaks Apple Record 20th Century Fox have announced the trailer broke Apple.com’s record for the most-viewed trailer ever. Avatar was streamed 4 million times in its first day, eclipsing the previous record held by J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek XI. BTW tickets are available for Thursday night Dec 17^th showing.

• Ian McKellen teases with Hobbit casting news Ian McKellen put in an appearance at London’s BFI IMAX cinema Saturday night for a special marathon screening of the extended editions of all three Lord of the Rings films, and surprised the audience by unexpectedly revealing Hobbit news during his introductory remarks. Not only did he confirm that he’ll be coming back as Gandalf, and is expecting to start work on set in March of next year, he also dropped a bit of a casting bombshell. According to McKellen, the starring role of Bilbo Baggins has been successfully cast already. Not only that, but he knows who has the role and he’s sure that the fans will be very, very pleased.  McKellen also revealed that he is expecting his own personal copy of the script within the next two weeks.

• ‘Star Trek’ Has Inspired Dan Aykroyd To Revive The Ghostbusters Franchise.  As reported by the Canadian Press, Actor / Writer / Producer Dan Aykroyd was so inspired by the revival of Star Trek franchise that he thinks ‘Ghostbusters 3′ should also involve passing the torch on to a younger generation.  Who knows, with the recent release and success of the Ghostbusters console game, maybe the time is right for another Ghostbusters installment. Let’s see what Dan has to say about it. “I think this last ‘Star Trek’ was great, they did a really fine job of revivifying those characters,” Aykroyd told The Canadian Press in a telephone interview from his farm in Kingston, Ont. “I’d like to see the torch get passed in sort of a ‘Star Trek’ manner so that the franchise lives on.”
• Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky - scribes for NBC’s “The Office” - have signed on to write “Ghostbusters 3.” Aykroyd has said that he and other members of the original cast - including Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson - are on board to reprise their roles. But Aykroyd still sounds cautious about the prospect of another film.

• “As (’Ghostbusters’ director) Ivan Reitman says - and I quote him now - ‘It’s all just talk,”‘ Aykroyd said.

• “That’s pretty much what we can say. Until we can see a script, until we have casting, until we’ve got a production number,” he added before trailing off. “I’m the biggest cheerleader. I think it’s going to happen, but really it’s just theory until the production number is stamped.”

• If the film does get made, Aykroyd figures it’s time to crown a new generation of Ghostbusters.

• “The old generation of Ghostbusters, we’re getting hip replacements now, we can’t lift the equipment anymore, the eyesight’s fading, we can’t drive the car, there’s so many things that are just physically breaking down,” he said.

• “We need a whole new cadre of cadets to get us through to a new generation.”

• Given Aykroyd’s unwavering passion for the franchise, he’s just as anxious about a sequel as the series’ ardent fans.

1. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released as a single disc DVD, a two-disc special edition DVD, and as a two-disc special edition Blu-ray on October 20, 2009.

• Defying Gravity – is getting better…..
• Syfy Greenlights Second Season Of ’Warehouse 13 … * Airlock Alpha has picked up word from a number of sources that Syfy already has commissioned a second season of its breakout new hit “Warehouse 13,” meaning 13 for now and possibly a total of 20 episodes when it’s all said and done for America’s newest favorite Secret Service agents Pete Lattimer and Myka Bering.Since its premiere in early July, the same night that SciFi Channel officially changed its name to Syfy, “Warehouse 13″ has been a ratings winner for the network. The most recent episode that aired Aug. 18 pulled in nearly 3.3 million viewers. That’s slightly below the 3.5 million viewers who tuned in for the initial premiere, which was the third largest debut ever recorded on the channel behind “Stargate: Atlantis” in 2004 and “Eureka” in 2006.

  NBC Universal, the parent company of Syfy, officially announced the renewal through Variety

  , but bringing “Warehouse 13″ back for a second season has already been pretty much a foregone conclusion.

  Part of the creative team of “Warehouse 13″ was Jane Espenson, best known to many genre fans for her work in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Firefly” and “Battlestar Galactica.” Espenson is now the showrunner for the upcoming Syfy series “Caprica,” the “Battlestar” prequel that is set to premiere in January on the network.

  “Warehouse 13″ already is averaging a stronger audience than Syfy’s other high-rated show, “Eureka,” which is averaging about 2.5 million viewers per episode. The success of shows such as “Warehouse 13″ and “Eureka” has helped Syfy justify its move toward more “grounded” series, and moving away from more expensive space-faring shows such as “Battlestar.”

  While “Caprica” is yet another grounded series coming to the schedule, Syfy isn’t shying away from shows set in space. The highly anticipated “Stargate: Universe” is set to premiere this fall, focusing on a ship built by the Ancients that a crew is trapped on.

  Variety

  confirmed the pickup with a 13-episode order.

• ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Season 2 Goes Darker * The second season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars promises to be darker and a little more violent.Clone Wars

  supervising director Dave Filoni says, “The second season is a bit darker. We have the rise of the bounty hunters entering the war — bringing in a lot of chaos and a whole new set of problems for Anakin and Obi-Wan.”

  The voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi, James Arnold Taylor, says the new season is amazing.

  “Ive seen some of the new episodes already completed, and they’re amazing,” Taylor said. “The action is there, and the humor is there. But we also see some new aspects of Obi-Wan and his past.”

  The creators of the show are looking to capture that same cool mystique that bounty hunter Boba Fett brought to the original movies.  Unfortunately the setting of Clone Wars doesn’t lend itself to the inclusion of Boba Fett.  There’s no mention of Fett’s appearance in season two and if he does appear, he’d have to be a kid.  Instead, the good guys will have the ruthless Cad Bane to deal with (amongst others), a new Bounty Hunter from the planet Duro who is cruel, calculating, and more than willing to go head to head against the Jedi.

  Clone Wars

  returns to the Cartoon Network for a second season this fall.

  Also, the first season will be released on DVD and Blu-ray November 3, 2009 and will include extended directors cut versions of seven episodes.

• ‘Stargate: SG1 and ‘Stargate: Atlantis’ Movies on Hold *This entire year has been filled with talk of the impending Stargate: SG1 and Stargate: Atlantis films (the latter titled Stargate: Extinction).  At one point sources indicated the SG1 movie would start filming before the year was out, and at another that both movies might be filmed back to back.

  Stargate

  fans will be disappointed to here both movies are now on hold.

  Stargate Universe

  executive producer Robert C. Cooper told Sci Fi Wire:

  “We’re ready to go,” Cooper said “We’re just waiting for the right opportunity. We want to be successful with it. The studio wants to be successful, and we really don’t want to proceed with something in the wrong climate, which I think financially it is right now.”

  He also confirmed that the Atlantis movie takes place shortly after the end of season five and that the SG-1 movie takes place sometime in between when the SG-1 movies left off and when Stargate Universe begins.”

  That is, if and when they happen.

• Stargate Universe responds to controversy over lesbian body swapping episode *But first, here’s the statement Stargate Universe creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper posted on the Gateworld forum this morning, after being barraged with complaints via email and Twitter from LGBT and disability rights groups responding to criticism of the episode on a handful of blogs and websites (including AfterEllen.com):

Recently, a casting breakdown was released to agents for a upcoming character in our television show, Stargate Universe. The character, Doctor Eleanor Perry, is a brilliant scientist at the top of her field, who also happens to be a quadriplegic. As part of a science fiction conceit that is core to our series, Perry’s consciousness is temporarily exchanged with one our series main characters, Camile Wray, who is a lesbian. In the course of the story, Perry has the experience of being able bodied for the first time since she was a child. At the same time, Wray, temporarily encumbered by Perry’s physical disability, experiences the unconditional love of her life partner.

The language of the breakdown was insensitive and inaccurate, and we sincerely apologize to those who may have been offended. The audition pages that have been under scrutiny were from an early draft and released out of context. It is our desire and intention to portray both characters with dignity and respect, while remaining mindful of the ethical issues we’re raising.

• ‘Smallville’: First Look at Brian Austin Green as MetalloGreen will appear in a two-episode arc that begins with the season 9 opening episode, ‘Savior’.  He plays John Corben, a new Daily Planet reporter who, in the aftermath of an accident, becomes the villain Metallo, a cyborg with a heart made of kryptonite.Executive producer Kelly Souders says the initial character will be a rough version of Metallo that is “a first attempt at the technology, and eventually he’ll get sleeker.”In other words, the first two episodes of the new season aren’t the only episodes Green will appear in.

• ‘Earth Vs Moon’: A $200M Sci-Fi War Epic Written for Will Smith “It’s about two societies at war, but it’s also about a family, not at war, but a fractured family,” Reese says. “Half of them have gone to the moon and the other half are still on Earth and so they are on opposite sides of this conflict and we wanted to make sure that as big of movie as it’s going to be, it works on a small level. It works on a personal level, the way we like to think about Zombieland working. It’s just this huge post-apocalyptic landscape, but we really want it to work on an interpersonal level for just a few people who are the stars.”

• ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Release Date Announced Columbia Pictures has announced the release date for their Black Hawk Down meets 28 Days Later sci-fi alien invasion actioner Battle: Los Angeles: February 18, 2011.The Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls / The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning / The Killing Room) directed film stars Aaron Eckart (aka Two-Face in The Dark Knight) as a tough Marine Commander in charge of a platoon battling against an alien invasion on the streets of Los Angeles.The script comes from Scott Silver (8 Mile / Requiem for a Dream) who was hired to rewrite an original screenplay by Chris Bertolini .Additional cast include Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Pena and Bridget Moynahan.

• District Nine does well: No blockbuster like Kong or LOTR, but good…Claiming the top spot, unsurprisingly, was

  District 9. The $30 million dollar mockumentary-style sci-fi thriller from first time feature director Neill Blomkamp brought in $37 million this weekend, easily besting second place G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra’s $22.5 million.

  A scarier/gore scifi – not my type of scifi – Event Horizon – but an orginal idea none-the-less

• Writer Hired to Pen ‘Spider-Man 5 and ‘Spider-Man 6 * Spider-Man 4 has yet to enter production but that hasn’t stopped Sony Pictures Entertainment from hiring screenwriter James Vanderbilt to pen Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6.Both Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6 will have an interconnected storyline.  Word is Vanderbilt’s original Spider-Man 4 script was also to be connected to Spider-Man 5, but the idea was scrapped due to the logistics of filming the fourth and fifth films back to back.Vanderbilt wrote the first script to Spider-Man 4 before director Sam Raimi brought on David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) to rewrite it. Pleasantville writer Gary Ross is now rewriting the rewritten script.Vanderbilt’s most recent script credits include The Losers for Warner Bros. and David Fincher’s Zodiac.As yet there is no confirmation that either Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire or Kirsten Dunst will sign on for the fifth and sixth films. If they don’t, Vanderbilt’s script will be used as a blueprint for a complete franchise reboot.

  Spider-Man 4 will head into production early next year for a slated release date of May 6, 2011.

• Bryan Singer never got a crack at Star Trek, but he’ll get his hands on a Battlestar Galactica movie Battlestar Galactica is getting the big-screen treatment. Universal Pictures has confirmed what was originally reported on HitFix.com that Bryan Singer, director of Valkyrie, will take on directing and producing duties for a BSG movie. Glen Larson, who created original series back in 1978, will produce as well. The film is not expected to be a continuation of current popular television show that’s running on the SyFy network but will be a complete re-imagining of the sci-fi lore that was invented by Larson back in the 70s.

• GI Joe Reviews:* Don’s review of GIJo:* Herne’s Review: The Joe characters overall were so-so. Scarlet was a bit sad with that   fancy crossbow. Snake Eyes was OK. Also, when you have a super-secret military base hidden underground,  you should probably shield it from radio waves… DUH! So, is it just me that too many movies these days are relying on   special effects over a good story? My final review of GI Joe is; way too much CGI, weak bad guy   characterization, more action / fewer explosions. I give it a low 3   out of 5.Other reviews posted by Herne: “A slightly more pleasurable experience than   Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But then again, so is a prolapsed   colon. ” and “…the movie starts to feel like a remake of   Team America: World Police without the jokes.” #GIJoe

• The Time Traveler’s Wife – The premise: A Chicago librarian suffers from a rare genetic disorder that sends him hurtling through time whenever he is under extreme duress; despite the fact that he vanishes at inordinately frequent and lengthy intervals, he attempts to build a stable future with the beautiful young heiress he loves. Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams star in this dramatic fantasy, which is directed by Robert Schwentke and based on the best-selling book by author Audrey Niffenegger. Clare has been in love with Henry her entire life. She believes they are destined to be together, even though she never knows when they will be separated: Henry is a time traveler–cursed with a rare genetic anomaly that causes him to live his life on a shifting timeline, skipping back and forth through his lifespan with no control. Despite the fact that Henry’s travels force them apart with no warning, Clare desperately tries to build a life with her one true love.Cliff’s review:

• Fox executives: We’ll leave Dollhouse alone this time. After a series of hiccups during the first season of Fox’s Dollhouse series—including scrapping the original pilot—executives of the network today promised they would leave creator Joss Whedon alone during the second season to do his thing. Also that episode 13 will guide the season to some extent…
• Estimated sales figures for the Dollhouse season one DVD. The Numbers website estimates that the Dollhouse DVD shifted 62,226 units in its first week of release with sales of $1,826,333.
• ABC announces V will debut in November.  Apparently Fringe will be out then too.

1. The cast and creators of ABC’s upcoming V announced Saturday that the show would premiere Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m. in a news conference at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif. (Spoilers ahead!Executive producer Jeffrey Bell also promised that star Morena Baccarin, who plays the alien leader Anna, will indeed eat a rodent of some kind.
2. “We want to find a way to do it,” Bell said, but added that if the producers simply duplicated the scene from the original miniseries, “been there, done that.” He added that the new show will feature homages to other iconic moments from the original miniseries.
3. Executive producer Scott Peters added that the producers were exploring a way to bring some of the original actors into the show, though not necessarily playing the same characters.

• 30 ‘Stargate Universe’ Webisodes in Development The scenes will take place through the eye of a sphere called the “Kino” that independently hovers around the ancient ship Destiny, spying on the crew. “It’s flying around and spying on people,” says series co-creator Brad Wright. “They are literally just voyeuristic scenes we’re shooting specifically for the Web. It’s an extra way to get a window on our program and gives fans a slice of life look at our ship.” The Kino sphere will also be technology used by the Stargate team to scout planets through the Stargate.

• Guild Season 3 is beginning – Just released “Do you want to date my avatar?” Absolutely hilarious. Avatar being more real than reality. The whole surrogates discussion.

• ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ Shines at the Box Office

1. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has stolen the number one weekend box office spot and set a couple of records after pulling in roughly $100.2M worldwide ($56.2M in the US and an estimated $44M internationally). Internationally G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra out-performed Star Trek in its opening weekend. Star Trek raked in about $35M whilst G.I. Joe scored $44M.
2. This places G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra as the 66th highest opening weekend grosser of all time in the US based on early figures. Once the final figures are in, it could also end up in the top 50 openers worldwide of all time.
3. The Stephen Sommers directed action flick also broke the box office record for the highest US domestic opening day for a non-sequel in the month of August ($22.3M).
4. The record for an August opening in the United States and Canada was set in 2007 by The Bourne Ultimatum, with $69.3 million, Reuters reported. Rush Hour 2 kicked off with $67.4 million in 2001, and “Signs” with $60 million in 2002. All ended up with more than $220 million.

• ‘G.I. Joe’ Sequel Announced
• Confirmed: ‘Terminator 5 In Development McG has not only confirmed Terminator 5 is being worked on, but so too is the third movie in the trilogy, Terminator 6. Terminator 5 will go back to the grass roots of time-travel and running from a new kind of Terminator
• Hugh Jackman Confirms ‘Wolverine’ Sequel Under Way They’re working on the sequel now and that the sequel will follow the famous Japan based storyline from the 1982 Chris Claremont and Frank Miller four issue miniseries Wolverine. X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 is expected to be released sometime during 2011.

Ten Minute in SciFi DVD/Video:

• Starman [Blu-ray] ~ Jeff Bridges, Karen Allen, Charles Martin Smith, and Richard Jaeckel (Blu-ray - 2009) $19.99 While most movie buffs are likely to call Halloween the best movie from John Carpenter, others–die-hard romantics and anyone who cried while watching E.T.–might vote in favor of the director’s 1984 hit Starman. It’s easily Carpenter’s warmest and most beguiling film, and the only one that ever earned an Oscar nomination. That honor went specifically to Best Actor nominee Jeff Bridges for his performance as an alien visitor to Earth who is knocked off course and must take an interstate road trip to rendezvous with a mothership from his home planet. To complete this journey he assumes the physical form of the dead husband of a Wisconsin widow (Karen Allen) who responds first with fear, then sympathy, and finally love. Carpenter’s graceful strategy is to switch the focus of this E.T.-like film from science fiction to a gentle road-movie love story, made believable by the memorable performances of Bridges and Allen. It’s a bit heavy-handed with tenacious government agents who view the Starman as an alien threat (don’t they always?), but Carpenter handles the action with intelligent flair, sensitivity, and lighthearted humor. If you’re not choked up during the final scene, well, you just might not be human. –Jeff Shannon
• Fissure ~ James MacDonald, Scarlett McAlister, Todd Terry, and Jim Blumetti (DVD - 2009) – 19.98 Detective Paul Grunning is trying to piece together his fractured life. When a routine disturbance at the Ulster home turns into an unexplainable death, all he has worked for will be tested. An ailing, addicted cop, Grunning (James Macdonald), is haunted by his own bad choices. He investigates the mysterious house, only to find shifting testimonies and perplexing new clues in every room. Sifting through the erratic claims of Rachel (Crystal Mantecon), the seductive grad student, Emma, the victim’s wife, and Andrew, a bitterly resentful sone, Grunning uncovers motives but no real answers. Ultimately, Grunning must navigate a fractured reality and his own insecurities to find what’s real.

• New Hitchhiker Book – what?  Isn’t Douglas Adam’s dead? You’d think that Eoin Colfer, whose Artemis Fowlfantasy novels have sold nearly 20 million copies, wouldn’t have a care in the world. But now that’s he’s written And Another Thing, the sixth book in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy franchise, a series which has sold nearly 15 million copies, the Irish author is finding it difficult to follow Douglas Adams’ famous instructions to, well, you know—”don’t panic.”
• “I’m still conflicted,” said Colfer about stepping into Adams’ shoes when I interviewed him at the San Diego Comic-Con. “It’s not something where you make up your mind and then say, ‘Well, that’s the right decision,’ and then put all your doubts behind you. Every day I think about it, I worry. But the reason I decided to do it was, I actually sat down and did pros and cons, and the pros were, I thought if I don’t do it, someone else will do it, and they might not love it as much as me.
• “Also, Jane and Polly [Adams’ wife and daughter] wanted me to do it, which was very important. They were the ones who convinced me. And I honestly think that I can kind of bring something to it and not try to be Douglas … but maybe people will read this, and then they’ll go back and read the other five, which is the whole point.”

• Heroes Redemption -   This trailer looks phenomenal. The Heroes premiere is Monday, September 21, 2009 (2 hour)
  1. Herne said too many plotlines crammed into 1st show, too obtuse for a 1st ep. I rate it ★★★☆☆ 3 out of 5 stars.  I would have to agree with this.

  • Rob Marshall Helming Fourth “Pirates”? “Chicago” and “Nine” director Rob Marshall is in talks to helm the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” for Walt Disney Pictures reports Variety. Original “Pirates” trilogy helmer Gore Verbinski hasn’t committed to the project and with the studio adamant on getting the project rolling by next Easter, this move to another director comes as no surprise. You’d think that Eoin Colfer, whose Artemis Fowlfantasy novels have sold nearly 20 million copies, wouldn’t have a care in the world. But now that’s he’s written And Another Thing, the sixth book in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy franchise, a series which has sold nearly 15 million copies, the Irish author is finding it difficult to follow Douglas Adams’ famous instructions to, well, you know—”don’t panic.”

“I’m still conflicted,” said Colfer about stepping into Adams’ shoes when I interviewed him at the San Diego Comic-Con. “It’s not something where you make up your mind and then say, ‘Well, that’s the right decision,’ and then put all your doubts behind you. Every day I think about it, I worry. But the reason I decided to do it was, I actually sat down and did pros and cons, and the pros were, I thought if I don’t do it, someone else will do it, and they might not love it as much as me.

“Also, Jane and Polly [Adams’ wife and daughter] wanted me to do it, which was very important. They were the ones who convinced me. And I honestly think that I can kind of bring something to it and not try to be Douglas … but maybe people will read this, and then they’ll go back and read the other five, which is the whole point.”

  • The Hobbit - We’ve been talking about releasing the first movie in December ‘11 and the second in December ‘12, and that’s what we’re aiming for. But we’ve only ever been aiming for it, and the studio obviously are not going to sign off on the films until they see a script and the budgets that are budgeting to that script.Among the highlights: The script for the first film is about three weeks away; no casting has been decided; the two movies will encompass the story in the book and won’t be one movie about the book and a second to bridge the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, as has been speculated; and the films will draw in narratives from the same era as told in other writings.

• Ronald D. Moore Talks ‘Caprica’. Crave Online asks Moore: Has it changed a lot from the pilot movie? Ron Moore: Yeah. The pilot’s a very specific story and then from that story, we’ve really expanded outward and brought some details that are surprising to some of the characters. Some things that we didn’t even hint about in the pilot, you then discover oh my God, that’s who that character really is, or that’s a different part of their character I didn’t suspect existed. Others we double back and you’re like oh, I thought they were going this direction. They’re actually going that direction. There was an effort to sort of change up the game a lot as we went into the series.
• A New ‘Twilight Zone’ Movie in Development. A new Twilight Zone move is in the works.  Variety report that Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way have hired Rand Ravich to pen a script based upon the original Twilight Zone TV series. Ravich’s writing credits include The Astronaut’s Wife (which he also directed), Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and The Maker. He is perhaps best known for creating NBC’s detective series Life. Rod Sterling created the original Twilight Zone TV series in 1959.  It ran for 156 episodes over five seasons.  In 1983 Twilight Zone: The Movie was made featuring four horror/sci-fi short stories from leading film makers of the day including Steven Spielberg, John Landis, Joe Dante and George Miller. The new Twilight Zone is tentatively scheduled for a 2011 release.
• ‘Star Trek’ Blu-Ray and DVD Release Details. - Available to be preordered from myscififstore.com. Some of DVD features are as follows:

1. The STAR TREK two-disc DVD is presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 televisions with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround, French 5.1 Surround and Spanish 5.1 Surround with English, French and Spanish subtitles.
2. Commentary — By director J.J. Abrams, writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, producer Damon Lindelof and executive producer Bryan Burk.
3. A New Vision — J.J. Abrams’ vision was not only to create a Star Trek that was a bigger, more action-packed spectacle, but also to make the spectacle feel real.  Every aspect of production — from unique locations to the use of classic Hollywood camera tricks — was guided by this overall objective.
4. Gag Reel — Bloopers featuring the entire principal cast.
5. To Boldly Go — Taking on the world’s most beloved science fiction franchise was no small mission. Director J.J. Abrams, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, producer Damon Lindelof, and executive producer Bryan Burk talk about the many challenges they faced and their strategy for success.

• ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ Breaks Another Record. Whilst Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince takes the world by storm it’s easy to forget that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is still making box office waves. Now Michael Bay’s Transformers sequel has smashed the Chinese box office to become the biggest earning movie in the country, surpassing an 11 year old record set by James Cameron’s Titanic. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has taken the equivalent of US $59M (400 million Chinese yuan) in China.  The second highest earner in the country is now Titanic with $43M. As of now Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has earned US $350M and $383M internationally to sit pretty on $733M.  It has now out-earned its predecessor and is ranked 16th in the all time top grosser list.
• Live Action ‘Voltron’ Film in Development. Hot on the heels of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’s success at the box office comes the announcement that a new giant robot movie is pressing forward – Atlas Entertainment has just acquired the rights to make the 1980’s television series Voltron into a live-action feature film. This could end up being a bigger movie than you might think.  Some of the producers names that are attached to the project are connected with notables such as The Dark Knight, Wanted, Get Smart and The International. The Voltron feature film hasn’t yet been set with a studio although Atlas apparently has a deal with Sony which could lead to Voltron becoming a new tentpole – something that I’m sure Sony will be thinking heavily about in light of Paramount’s recent success with  Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. One of Voltron’s producers, Ted Koplar, says Voltron will be set apart from Transformers. “Unlike other robotic action movies, Voltron is the personification of the human spirit,” he said, “a quality that will set this movie apart.” Set to release in 2011.
• Sam Raimi to direct World of Warcraft movie. Forget Spider-Man: Director Sam Raimi has signed on to direct Warcraft, the live-action film adaptation of the fantasy MMORPG World of Warcraft, Variety reported: Legendary Pictures and vidgame publisher Blizzard Entertainment are mounting the film, and Warner Bros. will co-finance and distribute. The team boasts an impressive pedigree: In addition to the director of Spider-Man, the partners have added The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven to the creative mix. The Warcraft universe features an epic conflict between the Horde and the Alliance.
• Half-Blood Prince smashes records as number one. The sixth Harry Potter movie, The Half-Blood Prince, lived up to expectation by taking in an estimated $159.7 million at the domestic box office since opening on Wednesday, the second-highest start ever for a movie premiering midweek (after Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen). The movie also took in $237 million overseas since Wednesday in 54 countries, bringing its worldwide total to $396.7 million. The sixth movie about the young wizard came in $20 million ahead of the last movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which grossed $139.7 million domestically in its first five days two years ago. By the end of its seventh day Tuesday, Half-Blood Prince will be in the $180 million range on its way to becoming the franchise’s first $300 million domestic smash since the original movie, 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, said Dan Fellman, Warner head of distribution.

• Finishing third after two weekends in the number one spot, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took in an estimated $24.2 million domestically for the July 10 weekend, raising its domestic haul to $339.2 million, the Associated Press reported; the sequel passed the $319 million total of 2007’s original Transformers.

• Caprica writer Jane Espenson tweeted that her former Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-writer Drew Z. Greenberg has joined the writing staff of the Syfy Battlestar Galactica prequel series.

‘Harry Potter’ Sets Midnight Box Office Record

• Forget giant robots, drunken groomsmen and Vulcans: The real hero of the summer will be a boy wizard if the preliminary box-office figures for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are any indication, according to Variety:The movie easily scored the biggest midnight gross of all time in earning $22.2 million as it unspooled in 3,003 runs at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.That figure beats the $18 million earned in midnight runs by Warners’ very own The Dark Knight and the $17 million earned by 20th Century Fox’s Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith.There’s a lot of pent-up demand among Potterphiles, who have had to do without an installment in their beloved franchise for two years. The last chapter, 2007’s Order of the Phoenix, grossed $12 million in midnight runs on its way to a $139.7 million five-day debut.

Latest ‘True Blood’ Episode Scores Record Ratings

• Sunday night’s episode of True Blood ‘Shake and Fingerpop’ has drawn record ratings for the series.The fourth episode of its second season raked in 3.9 million viewers, topping its season opening record by 200,000 viewers.By comparison True Blood’s first season of episodes averaged 2 million viewers.Needless to say there aren’t any questions amongst HBO executives about the potential for a third season.

Warehouse 13 is tops again among prime-time cable nets in adults.

• “Resonance” featured guest star Tricia Helfer. In its second Tuesday airing, Syfy’s new Warehouse 13 was the top original cable drama in prime time Tuesday for the second week in a row among adults 25-54, the network announced.The new episode, “Resonance,” beat new episodes of A&E’s The Cleaner, TNT’s HawthoRNe, TNT’s Saving Grace and F/X’s Rescue Me.  The one-hour dramedy delivered a 2.4 household rating, 3.4 million total viewers, 1.6 million adults 25-54 and 1.2 million adults 18-49. In its 9 p.m. timeslot, Syfy delivered more adults 25-54 than ABC (including a new episode of ABC’s Better Off Ted).

‘Battlestar Galactica’ Season 4 Soundtrack Sells Out (and some more cool Bear McCreary news):

• The first print run of Bear McCreary’s Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 soundtrack have sold out - two weeks prior to its release.  La La Land Records are now rushing to print more to keep up with demand.Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 has been the top selling TV soundtrack for over a month on Amazon and is currently in the Top 100 Music CD’s on Amazon (ranked #53).

Willem Dafoe Joins ‘John Carter of Mars’

• Willem Dafoe has joined the cast of Disney’s John Carter of Mars. John Carter of Mars is a new epic feature film adapted from the Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi story that follows a Civil War veteran who, after being transported to Mars, finds himself partially super-powered thanks to the planet’s low gravity.  There he becomes embroiled in a battle between the Martians and invading aliens.It is not yet known what role Dafoe will play in the film.  He will join Taylor Kitsch (aka Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) who has been cast in the title role of John Carter and Lynn Collins (aka Silverfox in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) who will play Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars.  Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3 / Idiocracy / Charlotte’s Web) is also rumored to star.Wall-E writer/director Andrew Stanton is the writer/director behind the project which has been likened to James Cameron’s Avatar in scope.  Dafoe has a number of films coming out over the next year including the sci-fi vampire thriller Daybreakers. Man Sues Claiming He Created ‘Lost’

• The producer of The Man From U.N.C.L.E and The Last Ninja, Anthony Spinner, is claiming that he was paid $30,000 to write a TV pilot way back in 1977 and that his script became Lost.   79 year old Spinner, who was nominated for an Emmy for Baretta, is suing ABC and Touchstone Television for creating a replica of his idea without providing him the associated credit - and the associated money.Spinner’s lawsuit contains a list of some 30 or so similarities between his story and Lost.  Here’s a couple of examples:*  Airplane headed to Los Angeles crashes into a tropical, jungle-like environment *  Doctor is the voice for the survivors * Trailblazer challenges the group to accept they are stuck on the island *  Stubborn reluctant semi-hero challenges the leadership of the real leader and has a dark father-son past *  Survivor suffers from a drug addiction *  Lone survivor of a scientific expedition is found with gunpowder, secure shelter, and a relationship with others who were on the island before them * Cold weather animals in warm tropical jungle *  Female lead with criminal past *  Cave dwellings with signs of riches, civilization, and written warnings *  Use of flashbacks to the regular life of each characterIf true it is difficult to believe that with all those similarities (and there are more) that there isn’t a basis to his claim, although it should be pointed out that he attempted to sue a few years ago but his case was dismissed, apparently for procedural reasons.

Blade and Crow Prequels

Last year it was announced that Stephen Dorff was set to return in a prequel to Blade and this week some more news has surfaced.

Stephen Norrington, who directed the first Blade film in 1998, has apparently confirmed that the prequel is going ahead and that it will be trilogy based on Dorff’s character Deacon Frost (who was killed by Blade in the first movie).

However, before the new Blade series of films get underway director Stephen Norrington will be taking the helm of a reimagined version of Alex Proyas’ 1994 film The Crow.

Rumor is Norrington’s version of The Crow won’t be a remake of the original starring Brandon Lee (in which he died during filming) but will instead follow an all new character and storyline using the basic premise only.

New ‘Star Wars’ Live Action Series Begins Pre-Production?

Australia’s SCI FI TV are reporting that the long talked about live action Star Wars series has actually started pre-production in Australia.

According to the report a number of ‘big names’ in the Australian television industry have been approached by Star Wars producer Rick McCallum.

SCI FI TV also speculate that the new series will be more adult centered, drawing the conclusion from the fact that some of the talent supposedly approached comes from adult centered Australian shows Love My Way and Secret Life of Us.

This speculation may actually be accurate given in the past George Lucas described the series as “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space.”

The new series will be set between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.  The story is said to follow the Rebel Alliance as it gains strength.

It is also said that no major characters will appear in the series and neither will any Jedi’s, nor Darth Vader.  However, if true this news doesn’t preclude appearances from the Sith (those that wield the dark side of the Force) or other not-so-major characters.

In one such example actor Jay Laga’aia has been in talks with George Lucas to star. Laga’aia played Captain Typho in both Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. Rose Byrne, who appeared as Dormé in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, has also confirmed casting in Australia has been happening.

Additional rumors have it that fan favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett will also feature.

George Lucas himself has stated the series will be 100 episodes in length.

Given the series has been tentatively slated for a 2010 release, if these pre-production reports are true fans can expect to hear a lot of new Star Wars news in the near future.

“Asteroids” Movie Optioned July 2, 2009 by Michael Hickerson

Universal Pictures has optioned the big-screen rights to the classic video-game “Asteroids.”

The studio won a bidding war between four studios for the rights to produce the Matthew Lopez written pictures.  The movie will be  produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

In “Asteroids,” initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. The object was to shoot and destroy the hulking masses of rock and the occasional flying saucer while avoiding smashing into both.

As opposed to today’s games, there is no story line or fancy world-building mythology, so the studio would be creating a plot from scratch. Universal, however, is used to that development process, as it’s in the middle of doing just that for several of the Hasbro board game properties it is translating to the big screen, such as “Battleship” and “Candyland.”

‘Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen’ Raking It In:

Regardless of what you think of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen the fact remains that it is destroying the box office.   According to Variety it is on track to hit the $600 million mark in worldwide takings and it is doing it faster than any other movie in history save the The Dark Knight.

The official numbers have the film at $593.9M made up from a US domestic haul of $293.4M and an international cume of $300.5M.  Impressive numbers considering it has only been 12 days since its release.

Pundits expect the film to haul $800M when all is said and done.  No one expects the Transformers sequel to overtake The Dark Knight which went on to take $1.1 billion.  A nose-dive in box office earnings is also expected to occur next week when Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince finally hits theaters (July 15).

There’s apparently no stopping those giant freaking robots: Michael Bay’s much-hyped sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen raked in an estimated $200 million in ticket sales domestically in just five days, the Associated Press reported.

That includes $112 million domestically in the sequel’s first weekend and $201.2 million since opening Wednesday. For its first five days, that puts the Transformers sequel second only to last summer’s The Dark Knight, with $203.8 million.

This was the biggest opening weekend of the year, surpassing the $85.1 million debut of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in early May.

The sequel began with $60.6 million in its opening day Wednesday.

• Sarah Connor producer on how the show would have continued. James Middleton, executive producer of Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, told SCI FI Wire that he remains passionate about continuing the story of the canceled series in another format, but does not want to get anybody’s hopes up. Middleton had producing credits on both the series and the film Terminator Salvation.”I feel like I don’t want to raise anybody’s expectations about what’s going to happen with those characters,” Middleton said in an exclusive phone interview Wednesday while promoting Terminator: The Machinima Series. “I can tell you that I love those characters. I use a business term, and it sort of belies my emotional investment in these characters, but they are a great franchise asset. My passion for them is not diminished at all, and I’ll just leave it at that.”The season finale that became the series finale left fans intrigued about new possibilities. John Connor (Thomas Dekker) travels to the future, where familiar faces such as Derek Reese (Brian Austin Green) do not recognize him.”It was a great way for us to end the season, but we would have liked to have continued,” Middleton said. “There’s no doubt about it. We liked making that show, and we all worked together really well, but the really great thing we can look back on is we’ve got 31 episodes of really good television. That’s something we can be proud of forever. That’s what we’ll have to take away from it.”

  One theory about the ending is that by leaping to the future, John Connor never grew up to become the leader of the human resistance. That would free him of the burden of saving humanity.

  “I think that that’s the right interpretation, because in the actual footage of the show, we see that Derek doesn’t recognize him,” Middleton said. “So, by jumping into this future, he has erased his existence in a certain way, and we see that. We see that nobody recognizes him.”

  Middleton added that leaping to the future changes John Connor’s fate. “We would have to have explored that if we did get a third season,” he said. “If we had gotten a third season, I should say, we definitely would have explored what it all meant, but I think there’s a great moment where we see Allison [Summer Glau], and John’s look to her is very meaningful. I think that also would have been a great thing in terms of dramatic potential. Like I said, the show has ended, and it would all be speculation, and I really don’t want to raise anybody’s expectations.”

  Whatever becomes of the Sarah Connor Chronicles timeline, Middleton wanted to leave fans with happy thoughts. “The thing that I would say to you, and I’m sure [show runner] Josh [Friedman] would echo this, is we so much appreciated our fans’ enthusiasm for these characters,” he said. “My enthusiasm for them is undiminished, and it will always be that way.”

• Virtuality: Apart from Virtuality being Ronald D. Moore’s first sci-fi outing since Battlestar Galactica, the major buzz surrounding the show has been directed at Fox.  First off, the story goes that Fox didn’t like what they originally saw and wanted it changed.  Secondly, and this is the biggie, that Fox will be airing the pilot in a death-slot for television because they have no intention of turning it into a series.  Although Virtuality is written by Ronald D. Moore the teleplay comes via Michael Taylor.  Taylor’s writing credits include various episodes of Battlestar Galactica, Dead Zone, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.  He’s also a co-executive producer on Caprica.
• What Richard Hatch thinks a proposed Battlestar movie can learn from Star Trek Richard Hatch—who played Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica and Tom Zarek in SCI FI’s re-imagining—told Moviehole that he’s watching the recently proposed feature film closely, though he’s not involved, and has ideas as to how to reboot the franchise.”I think they saw the success Paramount had with their Star Trek reboot,” Hatch told the site. “But unlike Paramount, who seems to know the Star Trek audience, I don’t think Universal ever quite got Battlestar. I just hope they hire the right people and make a good movie.”Universal Pictures quietly entered into negotiations with Battlestar creator Glen A. Larson to produce a big-screen version of the property he created, which would be unrelated to the recently concluded SCI FI series headed by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, according to The Hollywood Reporter in February.

  The film would reportedly preserve the premise—a ragtag fleet of human survivors runs from the murderous Cylons while seeking a new home on the mythical planet called Earth—as well as the characters of Adama, Starbuck and Baltar, but insiders told the trade paper that the movie will otherwise be a complete re-imagining of both series.

  Hatch told Moviehole that he believes Universal “should go further back, like Star Trek” in terms of the setting for the film. With Trek, Hatch said, it “was still the characters we love, but they went back 20 … 30 … years to when they were just kids. But with Battlestar, they’re just going to go back to the same timeframe we saw in the series and recast those roles. I don’t think Star Trek would’ve been successful if they had recast the Star Trek characters at the same age as they were in the previous films. By going back, it gave that film a window so fans could expect a change of cast.”

  Hatch added: “I don’t know what they’re going to do, but I love Battlestar, and I think there are so many more wonderful stories to tell. And as much as I think the original series deserves the big treatment, I think the new series deserves a series of movies as well.”

• Live action Movie The Jetsons: Robert Rodriguez told MTV.com that his proposed live-action Jetsons movie may go before cameras next year. “I’ve been developing [The Jetsons] for a while,” Rodriguez told the site, adding that he’s hoping to start shooting “next year.” While the director did confirm that the film would be live-action, he was predictably mum about other details. Adam F. Goldberg (Fanboys) wrote an early draft of the script, but it has since been reworked. “We’re writing the script right now,” Rodriguez said.
• Confirmed: Comedy Central orders new Futurama episodes! As rumored on Collider.com, Futurama will return to TV on Comedy Central six years after being axed by Fox, Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello reported. A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television confirmed the pickup to Ausiello, who reported that the cable network has ordered 26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen’s animated series, to begin airing in 2010.

Starship Farragut’s “A Rock and a Hard Place” Wins Award at Film Festival

WASHINGTON, DC, June 1, 2009 — Starship Farragut, an independent film project based on the original series of Star Trek, won “Best Fan Film of 2009” at the Wrath of Con science fiction conference and film festival in Panama City Beach, Florida. Starship Farragut won the award for it latest film, “A Rock and a Hard Place,” and last year, won the same award for its second film, “For Want of a Nail.”

Film Synopsis: Captain Carter (John Broughton), despite objections from Chief Engineer Smithfield (Holly Bednar), decides to on a planetary survey mission with an old flame. Things are not as they seem, and they soon realized that they not the only ones interested in the planet. Other noteworthy performances by D.D. Hatcher (Lt. Commander Bishop), Eddie Lao (Klingon Borok), and Jamie Hanna (Klingon Commander). Special acknowledgements to Director Mark Hildebrand, Assistant Director Eric Lund, Director of Photography Michael Bednar, original musical score by Hetoreyn, sound by Bill Bame and Ralph Miller, and visual effects by NEO f/x.

“We’re honored to have been selected as Best Fan Film of 2009,” said John Broughton, creator and Executive Producer of the series. “This film has outstanding special effects, the debut of a full-scale shuttlecraft interior set, and fight scenes choreographed by renowned Hollywood stunt choreographer, Leslie Hoffman. With each film effort, we explore new filmmaking aspects with the goal of bringing Classic Trek…Now.”

Mike Bednar, Vice President of Farragut Films and Producer of the Starship Farragut project attended the event, stating, “The fan friendly approach to this project clearly differentiates us from other Internet film projects. We’re constantly receiving fan adulation for the quality of our film efforts and for providing the films for free.” Farragut’s 17-minute episode competed against other fan films at the three-day convention and film festival. The film may be downloaded free at www.starshipfarragut.com.

Last year, Farragut Films debuted films three and four, “Just Passing Through” and “A Rock and a Hard Place.” Recently, Farragut Films unveiled Studio One in St. Marys, GA where the interior ship sets are located. Work is progressing on the remaining full 360 degree bridge set, which will be completed by 12/31/09. The project’s fifth and next episodic film will begin pre-production this fall with filming in early 2010 timeframe. In addition, NEO f/x’s production of Starship Farragut – The Animated Episodes will soon be released and features the voices of the Farragut crew in addition to well-known Star Trek guest stars, such as Tim Russ, Chase Masterson, and Chris Doohan (son of James “Scotty” Doohan). Star Trek Independent Fan Films:

Here is a brief synopsis of some of the more popular Star Trek Independent Fan Films that are out there.

Starship Exeter

Starship Exeter is set within the continuity of the original Star Trek series. It takes place on one of the sister ships of the famous USS Enterprise, the titular USS Exeter, NCC-1706, which appeared in the original Star Trek episode “The Omega Glory”.

Produced by Jimm and Josh Johnson for the non-profit Exeter Studio. To date, there is one complete episode, one nearing completion (with all but the fifth, final segment released), and a third in development.

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men

(OGaM) is a three-part unofficial Star Trek fan mini-series which contains many cast members from the Star Trek TV series and movies. It is described by its producers as a “40th Anniversary gift” from Star Trek actors to their fans. It was filmed in 2006, but its release was delayed until 2007-08. It is not officially endorsed by the owners of Star Trek, but has been covered on the official Star Trek website.

Star Trek: Phase II (f/k/a Star Trek: New Voyages)

Co-creators James Cawley and Jack Marshall aimed to complete the original series’ five-year mission, with actors cast as Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew on an exact replica of the original bridge set. One episode — “To Serve All My Days” — was written by D. C. Fontana, story editor on the original Star Trek series and featured Walter Koenig guest-starring as an older version of Pavel Chekov, his character from the original series. Several other actors from the original Trek series have also now signed on to appear in future episodes. George Takei reprised his role of Hikaru Sulu in the third episode, “World Enough and Time”, joining the original Yeoman Janice Rand, Grace Lee Whitney. Fan Films Quarterly listed New Voyages as one of the ten most pivotal moments in fan film history in its Summer 2006 issue, and has been reported on by National Public Radio. [12] New Voyages also won TV Guide’s 2007 Online Video Award for best sci-fi Webisode. [13] On February 16, 2008, during an appearance at the Farpoint Science Fiction Media Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, James Cawley announced that the series would shed the New Voyages moniker and become known as Star Trek: Phase II to reflect the transition between the original series and Star Trek:

Star Trek: Intrepid

A fan film produced in Scotland and currently the only Star Trek fan production in the U. K. Intrepid is set in the 24th century, several years after Star Trek:Nemesis, and revolves around the effort to colonise a distant and largely unexplored sector of the galaxy. Star Trek: Intrepid was filmed entirely in Scotland and was released on May 26, 2007. GMTV presenter Lorraine Kelly has a brief appearance in Intrepid [6] and the production has received extensive coverage in both national and international media, such as CNN, [7] BBC Radio Scotland [8] The Guardian,[9] and The Scotsman. [10] Intrepid was featured on the UK Sci Fi Channel’s Sci Fi 360 video podcast.[11]

Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning

is a 2005 motion picture produced by five friends in a two-room flat with a small budget and the support of a few hundred fans and dozens of acquaintances. Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is the seventh production in the Star Wreck movie series, the first of professional quality and feature length. It is a dark science fiction comedy about domination of the world and the universe, and a parody of the Star Trek and Babylon 5 universes.

Starship Farragut is an independent film series based on the original series of Star Trek.  Starship Farragut is based on the crew of the U.S.S. Farragut, a Constitution Class Starship (NCC-1647) commanded by Captain John T. Carter, and takes place during the time of legendary Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise (NCC-1701). In our interview with executive producer and actor John Broughton, he chats about Farragut Films, what got him into Fan Films and why he does them.  He goes into the various Starship Farragut episodes.  As a die-hard TOS fan, what did he think of  J.J. Abram’s Star Trek?  We have it here.

ABC “V” TV SERIES PILOT PROMO TRAILER is released, and we are liking what we’re seeing.

Human Target – This Fall FOX TV Show is based on a DC comic.  It takes a brave, selfless man to make himself a “human target” in order to save the lives of those in danger.  We like the potential of this show as well.  It stars Mark valley from Fringe (which we like), Chi McBride, “Pushing Daisies”, and Jackie Earle Haley, “Watchmen”.

A Review of the Movie Doomsday.

Summary: A lethal virus spreads throughout the British isles,infecting millions and killing hundreds of thousands. To contain the threat, acting authorities brutally quarantine the country as it succumbs to fear and chaos. The quarantine is successful. Three decades later, the Reaper virus violently resurfaces in a major city. An elite group of specialists, including Eden Sinclair, is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare.

The Smallville Finale. Scott didn’t watch it, but Miles is a dedicated watcher and is meh on the whole thing.   Also he is not real excited about the death slot CW has placed it in the Fall when it returns.  It will air 8 -9 PM on Fridays.

We loved the Dollhouse Finale.  Matt wrote in and said that he doesn’t know if it deserves a second season. We think FOX felt bad for cancelling Firefly, and didn’t want to risk making the same mistake twice on a Joss show.  We also discuss why FOX said Terminator was cancelled.

The Fringe Finale was phenomenal.  There’s just no other way to say it.  Miles watched his first Fringe episode ever, mainly because Spock was in it, and I believe we have a convert.  We also listen to the Fringe folks discuss their controversial ending and give our take on it.

Flash Forward: ABC aired a new promo for its upcoming sci-fi series Flash Forward during last night’s season finale of Lost, and you can watch it after the jump.

The show, based on Robert J. Sawyer’s novel, deals with what happens when everyone on Earth briefly falls unconscious at the same time for 2 minutes and 17 seconds. During those moments, people see what happens to their lives six months in the future.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek exceeded expectations at the May 8 weekend box office, beaming up a whopping estimated $76.5 million, the Associated Press reported. That includes $72.5 million for the Friday-Sunday period and $4 million from preview screenings on Thursday.

Paramount Pictures had estimated that the movie would make about $50 million for the weekend but figured that strong reviews helped carry it to the bigger opening. The film, which had a $140 million budget, should gross more than $200 million total this summer, even against such competition as Terminator: Salvation, coming on May 21, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, arriving in theaters July 15, the AP reported.

The fact that Star Trek’s haul improved from $26.8 million on Friday to $27.4 million on Saturday is a good sign, suggesting the film will have “legs,” analysts said.

Last week’s top grosser, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, came in second place, with an estimated $27 million. The prequel has made nearly $129.6 million in two weeks.

• Underworld’s Michael Sheen becomes a vampire in New Moon Michael Sheen, who played a werewolf in the Underworld movies, will switch teams to play a vampire in New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, the U.K. newspaper The Daily Mail reported.
• Faran Tahir breaks barriers as a new starship captain in Star Trek (played terrorist leader in Iron Man. Faran Tahir, a Pakistani-American actor, has the distinction of playing Captain Robau, the first Federation starship captain of Middle Eastern (well, South Asian) ethnicity to play a major role, in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek, and he told SCI FI Wire the honor isn’t lost on him.  In this, Tahir is the latest in a long line of ethnic actors who have taken on color-blind roles in Trek, which has had a tradition going back to the original series and creator Gene Roddenberry of imagining a future where every person lives up to his or her fullest potential, regardless of race or ethnicity. (Possible spoilers ahead!)
• Updated: Dollhouse producer Tim Minear explains about the 13 episodes. Fox announced that it will air the season finale of Joss Whedon’s Fox sci-fi series Dollhouse at 9 p.m. ET/PT on May 8, the 12th episode, titled “Omega.” Which is raising questions among fans about the status of a supposed 13th episode, titled “Epitaph One.” Tim Minear, consulting producer of Dollhouse, clarifies that the season finale of Fox’s Dollhouse was always intended to be “Omega,” the 12th of the original episodes ordered (not counting the original pilot, which was scrapped and cannibalized for parts). “Epitaph One,” meanwhile, was a standalone episode that was never intended to be part of the original 13, but rather was created to fulfill the DVD deal for 13 episodes once the pilot was no longer usable. Here’s how Minear explains it on Whedonesque: “Okay. So maybe I can help clarify this somewhat. Because we scrapped the original pilot—and in fact cannibalized some of its parts for other eps—we really ended up with 12 episodes. But the studio makes DVD and other deals based on the original 13 number. So we created a stand-alone kind of coda episode. Which is the mythical new episode 13. The network had already paid for 13 episodes, and this included the one they agreed to let us scrap for parts. It does not include the one we made to bring the number back up to 13 for the studio side and its obligations. We always knew it would be for the DVD for sure, but we also think Fox should air it because it’s awesome.”

• Terminator Salvation: It looks like McG may have lost his bid to have his upcoming Terminator Salvation rated R, at least if we can believe the Pizza Hut promotional tie-in Web site, which shows the film with a PG-13 rating.  We’ll believe it when we see it. Of course, Warner Brothers has not announced the film’s rating officially, so it’s possible the PG-13 rating on the Pizza Hut site is an error. If the movie does carry the rating, it would mark a softening of the franchise, whose three previous films have all carried the harder R rating.
• Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles:   People predicting that with low ratings it is not coming back. We share our thoughts on this.  Plus we comment on last week’s shocking surprises.
• More than 1 million have downloaded the illegal Wolverine copy.
• Passengers: Rick Nicita’s Morgan Creek is near a green light on Passengers, a new sci-fi romance movie starring Keanu Reeves, Variety reported. The movie takes place in the future, as a spacecraft is transporting people to colonize a distant planet. Because of a malfunction, a single passenger (Reeves) is awakened 90 years before anyone else. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he awakens a beautiful woman. Jon Spaihts wrote the script, which is being developed by producers Reeves and Stephen Hamel. Robinson is also producing.
• Warehouse 13: The show centers on two FBI agents, Myka and Peter, who work at the government’s Warehouse 13, which houses supernatural objects. They are assigned to retrieve missing objects and investigate reports of new ones. The dramatic comedy, from Universal Cable Studios, is described as part The X-Files, part Raiders of the Lost Ark and part Moonlighting.  July 2009 premiere.

High Plains Invaders: James Marsters, who stars in the SCI FI Channel original movie High Plains Invaders, told SCI FI Wire that adding aliens is the only way to reinvent the western. Marsters plays a reluctant cowboy hero who leads a town against invading alien bugs.  Sounds like a bad SciFi TV movie to us. Men in Black 3 and Ghostbusters 3 and Spiderman 4: Rory Bruer, president of Sony Worldwide Distribution, announced during the company’s ShoWest 2009 presentation that it is developing another Men in Black movie, collider.com reported. ShoWest is an annual convention and trade show for the motion picture exhibition and distribution community (SciFi.Wire) Bruer also confirmed Sony is hard at work on a Ghostbusters sequel and Spider-Man 4. All three projects are in the works with an eye toward 2011 releases. Alice in Wonderland to premiere simultaneously in IMAX 3D March 5, 2010 – Tim Burton Producing and Johnny Depp as Madd Hatter. Fringe Returns April 7th 9 PM FOX.  And we share some Transformers news.

We discuss our thoughts on the ending of Battlestar Galactica.  We start off discussing things we like such as the special effects, the music, the battle, etc.  We also discuss some of the things we felt were loose ends, some plot problems, and general issues we had with finale.  However, overall we give the episode 8 out of 10 flaming Cylon Raiders.

News: Shore Leave 31 - July 10-12, 2009 - A fan con in Maryland you don’t wanna miss. Many notables will be there, a few of which are Jason Momoa (Ronon Dex from Stargate: Atlantis), Rachel Luttrell (Teyla Emmagan also from Stargate: Atlantis), and Jasika Nicole (Astrid Farnsworth from the Fringe).

SciFi changing to “SYFY: Imagine Greater.” We think there might be a few screws loose at the SciFi Channel.

Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG1 are releasing more DVD movie. We will get a sneak peak at SGU (Stargate Universe) during SciFi (or should I say SyFy)  Channel’s Stargate: Ark of Truth premiere on March 27th and Stargate: Continuum on April 3. Robert Carlyle, star of the upcoming SCI FI Channel original series Stargate Universe, told SCI FI Wire that the show will be more character-driven and feature fewer aliens than its Stargate predecessors.

MacGyver pulling a movie together out of household items.  New Line is developing a movie based on the hit TV series MacGyver, which turned Richard Dean Anderson into a star.  We wonder if he will play the role?

Star Wars Live Action News: New Zealand actor Jay Laga’aia is talking to George Lucas about a role in a live-action Star Wars television series next year, the New Zealand-based newspaper The Dominion Post reported. Lucas had previously cast Laga’aia as Captain Gregar Typho, Amidala’s head of security, in Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith. It’s unclear if he’s in talks to reprise the role or to play a different one.

The series will reportedly follow the Rebel Alliance as it slowly gains strength against the the evil Empire. The newspaper also reported that the show is a basic cable TV series and that it will feature stormtroopers, but not Jedi knights or Darth Vader. Lucas is currently casting for the series.

The fact that Laga’aia may be cast suggests that Lucas is considering shooting the show somewhere in Australia or New Zealand. Lucas shot parts of Episode II and III at Fox Studios in Sydney.  (SciFi Wire)

Darth Vader is dying. David Prowse, the original actor behind Darth Vader, is suffering from cancer.  He is known for creating Darth Vader visually as we know him.

Scott and Miles also talk about current Scifi news: the success of The Watchmen, new named episodes of Stargate Universe, NBC’s new alternate reality series Kings, the renewal of Heroes, the casting of Black Widow in Iron Man 2, the third installment in the Chronicles of Riddick, and news on the new Star Wars Live Action TV Series.

We like that the Dollhouse is on remote free tv.  We thought it was a good episode…not great.  The judgments still out for me.

Synopsis of the Episode:

Ep. 1 - Ghost - Synopsis: Echo is one of the “Actives” in the elite and illegal Dollhouse. Through different personality downloads, she plays the role of a lovestruck girl on a romantic weekend, and then a ruthlessly efficient kidnapping negotiator. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Paul Ballard is struggling with his assignment to uncover information on the Dollhouse. The chase has destroyed his marriage and is wrecking his career, and it doesn’t seem that he’ll stop until he uncovers the truth. The father of the kidnapped child triggers confusion in Echo when he attacks her competence as a manufactured psyche.

We thought the cycle race was a great way to open the show. Still it was not as capturing when you first saw Firefly. The relity is that everyone’s going compare this to his last show. The first episode of Firefly opens like this: The Train Job - 20 Sep 02 “Mal, Zoe and Jayne relaxing over a few drinks at a bar. A man stands and makes a toast to the Alliance to celebrate Unification Day. Mal and Zoe, who fought for the Independents in the War, end up in a brawl. Jayne joins in and, just as their opponents have forced them to the edge of a cliff, Wash flies in to save the day.”  IMDB

We felt this was a stronger opening and established setting a bit better. We have some questions:

What/who is Alpha?  We know she is a doll, but why the importance?

Who is the man the end of the episode?  We assume that he is in Echo’s house and that Echo’s parents are dead.

What happened to Claire Saunders, the Dollhouse physician? Where did she get those scars?

Trivia: The names of the Dolls are all words from the NATO phonetic alphabet. This alphabet is used for radio communication because many letters sound the same over such connections. Thus one says “Alpha” instead of “A”, “Bravo” instead of “B”, and “Echo” instead of “E”. Stats:

Dollhouse attracted 4.72 million viewers overnight, with 6% share of the 18-49 audience.

Never the less, the show did have less overnight viewers than Firefly.

In this first podcast, Don and Scott introduce themselves.  In this diner, the conversation wanders from Hellboy II and it correlations to Tolkien to anticipation of the first Dollhouse episode by Joss Whedon (creater of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Firefly).  We also talk about the current Volume of Heroes and look forward to the new StarTrek movie.
